Will starts the season as the new coach of Vocal Adrenaline (on Sue's recommendation, stating that he needed to get him off his back). Learning that Rachel is restarting New Directions, it helps to build her confidence a little despite the fact that she is now her rival. In Funk, Will and Terri finalize their divorce and he is distressed. It gives Glee Club members the task of performing funk numbers.
Tired of Sue's incessant harassment, try to seduce her and sing Tell Me Something Good. He asks her for a date, stands her up and humiliates her. When Sue retires from the cheerleading competition, Will realizes that many of the cheerleaders could lose scholarships and apologizes to Sue. Towards the end, he has the Glee Club perform Give up the Funk in front of Vocal Adrenaline when they discover they can't do a funk number.
Sue invites the team to compete against the Warblers coached by Blaine and the New Directions led by Rachel and Kurt. But now Will Schuester is a family man, happily married and earning too much money training Vocal Adrenaline. Even though Will rapped on Friday's episode and was generally too morally pure and cheesy, his reasoning for being tall and powerful about Vocal Adrenaline is justified and really represents why Will was such a good coach in New Directions. He also kissed Shelby, the former coach of The Troubletones and Vocal Adrenaline, although there wasn't much between them after that.
Will was a close friend of football coach Ken Tanaka, and has a complicated friendship relationship with Sue Sylvester, the school's head coach who despises the Glee Club. Will Schuester's classic way of teaching and training doesn't really work well with Clint and the rest of the Vocal Adrenaline team members, and they're not afraid to show him how they feel about him. However, in the first episode after the hiatus, which was also the first episode that Will was with Emma, Will went and was unfaithful to his new girlfriend with Vocal Adrenaline coach Shelby Corcoran. They're ready to destroy Vocal Adrenaline, but Coach Beiste reminds them not to drop to their level.
As Vocal Adrenaline is about to perform his set for the competition, he tries to channel team spirit by making a speech, but the Glee club member doesn't care what his coach is saying at all. From the time jump, it is revealed that Will is still teaching at McKinley and did not take the interview for the coaching position with Vocal Adrenaline. The group is seen performing the song You Give Love a Bad Name while Will talks about how being the coach of Vocal Adrenaline is a lot different than when he was in New Directions.
